So this past weekend some 41 year old white "lady" from Sea Point told a fellow South African who happened to be black to "fuck off, you bloody kaffir!" because he dared to get in her way on an escalator at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

The V&A security people intervened and suggested to the woman that she apologise but she declined their invitation so they took her to the Table Bay police station where she was arrested for crimen injuria. She paid a R150 admission of guilt fine and was released. Case closed and the cops refuse to indentify her. So we don’t know this racist white bitch’s name. Why the fuck not!?

I have some questions for you, dear reader. Please indulge me your answers to the following:

In your opinion, should she have been arrested for cursing someone out at all?
Is the fine appropriate for what she did?
Should her name be published or not?

You tell me what you think, and I’ll come up with an opinion in due course. Deal?

I think if the words she had used didnt have a racist connotation then, no. I swear a fair bit for someone who considers themselves to be polite, so if cursing someone is justified than fair enough. In this case, however, not only is she swearing, but using racial epithets in a public place which, in itself, has no justification at all. Aside from being highly offensive, had the wrong kind of people been around the use of such words could have incited some kind of violence. Therefore, i think arrest and a fine are completely appropriate punishment. I cant comment much to the size of the fine ( i dont work in Rand here…. ) but i definately think her name should be published. If she is loud and proud ( or stupid… ) enough to be airing racist views in a public place, she should be able to stand by her words in the most public of places, the news media.

Thing is I feel it is, and if I yelled at a woman in a shopping mall and called her a “fucking bitch” in public, I’m confident that security would intervene to stop a conflict situation escalating. They might also ask me to apologise.

I don’t know what upset this woman, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the man she called a kaffir.

That woman was just an evil little shit. There’s no debate to be had with her. She needs to feel it, and making people pay money is a lost cause. The only thing that will truly make them pay attention is the total loss of their freedom for 12 months. No early outs. You serve the full 12 months, and more if you cause kak whilst incarcerated.

Hving lived in South Africa,that was heard more times than saying good morning, then it that period of time,the poor African just had to lump it,as no policeman or any court of the country would have even worried to make it a case for complaint,but now that we are living in a supposed to be a real democracy and race in South Africa should not be a problem,this type of attitude is to be made a case for legislation and passed as a law of the country either way.But the fine in this case should have been about .300.00 Rand or a week behind bars

Okay, how about every weekend in jail for four weeks – first offence? Thing is, its only the first time they’ve been convicted and you gotta know they’ve done it hundreds of times already, even if its only in their heads.

It’s that total disrepect thing going on in their heads that we’ve gotta pound out of them. So, how long do you think they need to spend in jail to work through their angst?

I reckon a person who screams, “kaffir!” at a black person in public has a serious attitude problem that only one entire year in jail is going to drive out.

Racially abusing someone is not a trivial crime. It is serious. It completely humiliates a person. It is completely disgusting.

Take Eugene Terreblanche for an example. That guy was totally obnoxious. He yelled racial obscenities at the drop of a hat and attacked a black person. He went to jail. Spent six years in prison and that turned him around.

So I say, anyone who yells, “kaffir!” at a black person, must go to jail for 12 months.

I want to hit racists hard. Very hard. Second offence is 5 years. Third offence 10 years. You don’t want to know what the fourth offence is. You’re not going to live that long.

A lot of countries have anti-hate laws that most definitely distinguish between anger/hatred directed at an individual and anger/hatred directed against an ethnic group. I think it is perfectly acceptable to hate Nazi’s -they are group defined by their views. I hate their views. There is more genetic difference between me and my sister than me and a black man. I am a caucasion of western european origin. I am, in fact, the same colour as a black man. The black man’s colour is more saturated than mine -he has more melanin producing cells than I do but his melanin producing cells are the same as mine. From a genetic perspective differences in skin colour are so trivial as to be of no importance. If I lean on my melanin producing cells I can become as dark as many africans. Colour is irrelevant. The challenge is bridging the cultural divide.
You have a tough row to hoe but culture is learned. Note I am not implying that one culture needs to be assimilated. The shortest route is for each culture to add a bit that includes respect for other cultures.

I’m of the opinion that it’s not colour that’s the problem here. It is one person being stupid and calling another person by a derogatory name because perhaps she felt superior, was wronged and/or entitled to respect/whatever. If she was so wronged, why not just call him ‘asshole’ or ‘bastard’?
This happens in all countries and as we’ve seen, and still see today can result in acts of genocide. Still somehow the world hasn’t learnt a lesson. Just Google ‘Darfur’ and you’ll see what I mean.
I believe the problem is ignorance and lack of tolerance of other ethnicities or races and so I’m not sure whether beatings and/or jail time will cure that, especially seeing as our jails are already something like 160% overcrowded. It might even make the problem worse.
Freedom of speech is great but so many people still don’t realise that one still has to take responsibility for one’s speech.
I would say that we are probably lucky to have a small minority of racists in this country and probably if we ignore them they will go away by themselves.

This is a truly nasty incident. I disagree, however, with the suggestion that she should receive a 12-month jail sentence. I agree with Marko that this is more likely to be a case of someone’s bad day spilling out in a stupid way. This sense of superiority the woman suffers from would not be cured by a fine or by jail time (more likely to make her bitter and defensive). Far better to make her face the consequences of her actions there and then, by sitting down with the man she insulted and asking her to apologise and “mean it”. By looking him in the face, we would force her to acknowledge his humanity.

Yes, it’s a bit like dealing with a three-year-old but that’s precisely how she has behaved:
“Suzy, you hurt Johnny’s feelings when you said X. Now I want you to say sorry and mean it.”

@Truth: Shouting obscenities at someone in a public place is a criminal offence. Blogging about it after the fact and describing her as a bitch is an insult and an opinion which does not constitute a public disturbance.

The problem is that this woman created a public disturbance over a trivial slight. People get in the way of others all the time, and while it is annoying, it does not warrant a public racist outburst. The security are there to keep the peace and since the woman involved was unwilling to curb her unruly behaviour, she was arrested.

I think people who still regard blacks as “kaffirs” are sick people in need of psychological help.

Yes, the word “kaffir” originates from Egyptian or Arabic and means “non believer”.

People use the word loosely in this shithole to deal with the compounding daily frustrations caused by the mass majority of over-populated undereducated “underprivaleged” inescapable swarm of hell that assaults a person no matter where one goes.

I fully sympathise with the lady who has been targeted.
In SA nowadays and everywhere else in the world it is only the “whites” who are racist, yet when a black has something derogatory to say to us it is oh shame they are so misunderstood and downtrodden give them a break. It is now a permanent feature of the white race. So for a white person to perpetrate even more offense against black people is completely unacceptable.

If you think the Germans have moved on from their Nazi past, you are wrong. Germans will forever remain tainted with Nazism. It is not something they will live down in 1000 years. In 1 000 000 years time, Germans will still be strongly associated with Nazis, despite all attempts to separate the two. It is the same for Afrikaners and Apartheid. Yes the lady was outspoken and i disagree with that. All this talk about Arabic ect. is past tence. I worked and work with allot of black people and had one as a manager and he was the best i have ever seen. The way he did things, I CHALLENGE all races to this. Forget about your race and sex. HI. I think we have grown a lot in this country since this article was written. I take myself as an example. In 2007 when you wrote this – I might not have thought to much about it. I would not have used that language but it would not have phased me. I know. When I read this today I got the chills and was really embarrassed for her part. Forget race, its about morals..HUMANITY. We are all human after all, although some people here would like to believe that only some races are human and some are not. Before we can classify you as black or Indian, female or male, Nguni or English speaking, we first and above all classify you as a human being! Wake up! Someone said the 3131 deaths of farmers since 1994 justifies what this woman said. Oh come on!! Since you into stats, 21000 blacks died during apartheid, of which 14000 died in the six-year-transition process from 1990 to 1994. So does that justify blacks killing farmers? Don’t patronize us, our people suffered immensely! But I rather we not dwell on that. killings don’t fix jack or justify anything for that matter. Pointing fingers is blatantly pointless! We could go back and forth about this, but the underlying fact is that, killing each other is wrong, treating each other like crap is wrong, and what this woman said was wrong! Period!
