A primer for South African pessimists: how to cope with the current energy crisis

Posted on January 20th, 2008 by Richard Catto 5,885 views

Reading a number of blogs, I’ve discerned a common theme – rampant pessimism and predictions of certain doom for all of us, as a direct result of the current energy crisis.

I find it amazing how some South Africans are so eager and quick to paint South Africa in the darkest possible shades of black, given any setback. It’s as if the problems which afflict us are unique and discernible nowhere else in the world. For every problem that arises in SA, the knee-jerk answer is that these things do not and could not possibly occur elsewhere, ever. The implied theme is that a BLACK government, any BLACK government, is incompetent and incapable of responsibly governing any country.

Fact is, California experienced an electricity crisis which lasted from June 2000 through November 2003. This crisis was precipitated by market manipulation by the State of California. They imposed price controls which led to a situation where utility companies had to pay more for electricity than they could sell it for, and so production (of electricity) fell, companies went bankrupt and consumers experienced rolling black-outs.

I’d like to emphasize that this happened in a FIRST WORLD country. Furthermore, the State of California has the largest economy of all the states in the US. So it really is disingenuous to continually conclude that mismanagement, flawed delivery and total screw ups are the sole purview of Third World countries. Corruption happens everywhere, every day.

I’m very confident that any and all mishaps that occur in South Africa will be met with the same predictable response – black governments are useless!

If a bridge were to collapse, for instance, I’m certain that a million or more unhappy South Africans would make odious comparisons between our country and first world countries. I’m waiting for that to occur, and while I wait, I’m keeping this bit of ammo in reserve:

Design flaw cited in U.S. bridge collapse

Not that I’m expecting the imminent collapse of any bridges, but you never know. What I’m saying here is that people all over the world make mistakes, act irresponsibly, make incorrect predictions about the pace of growth of an economy and otherwise manage to fuck things up in all the same ways that we do.

In a way, it is actually a compliment that we are experiencing this electricity crisis because it came about due to our economy’s unexpected high growth rate – much higher than expectations. That is a good thing, per se. The only thing that makes it bad, is that we have temporarily run out of power to keep it all aglow and working.

So, although, the power crisis is apparently set to grow worse in the immediate short term, it doesn’t mean that things will remain that way.

The question you gotta ask yourself, is "Do you want to be part of the problem or part of the solution?"

Here’s the Problem:

And here’s an example of a solution (there are more):

What do I think is going to happen?

I think that South African businesses will find creative solutions to solve their energy problems. I believe that Eskom and the South African government will take effective measures to limit the damage to our economy.

The IOL article (linked above) lists several measures that Eskom is taking to resolve this problem, among them a subsidy program to assist homeowners to install solar heat. Eskom is actually prepared to pay part of your costs to install solar panels, if you wish to do so now. That’s something you will enjoy benefits from long after the energy crisis is over.

So, please my fellow South Africans, it’s not all doom and gloom.

The real question you should be asking yourself (if this applies to you) is why are you so prepared to believe the worst every time something goes wrong?

Why do you really lack confidence in South Africa?

Is it a black thing?

I am trying hard to find a positive in all this. My problem is that the power supplier predicted the scenario we are now experiencing 10 years ago. The mismanagement does not appear to be on their side, it is the powers that be that chose to ignore the warnings.

Having said this, we all will have to accept the fact that there is a problem and hope that all concerned will find a speedy solution. A good start would be to recall the minister of Public Enterprises from his holiday.

Why recall him? It’s not as if he has answers in his bag, you know.

I must correct you on a few points, since you cite my post at the top of your list.

I never said, or implied, that this has anything to do with the government being black. In fact, I explicitly said it’s NOT because blacks can’t run a country, but it’s because assorted socialists, communists, unionists and Keynesian statists can’t run a country.

I also noted that the electricity crisis is only the latest in a series of events that show such leftist thinking at work. I’ve covered telecommunications ever since the ANC came to power, and it makes an even better case study for the failures of state control and state planning.

Your example that it happens elsewhere shows that it did so for exactly the same reasons: flawed leftist thinking, state intervention in markets, over-reliance on government service delivery, and bungled deregulation. So they support my point, in fact.

I should also point out, as I did in my response to you on my own blog, that I posted about Toshiba’s small nuclear reactor before Christmas last year.

You’re right that Alec Erwin has no answers, however. And that’s not because he’s black, but because he’s a statist and socialist. And that’s the answer to your question, “Why do you really lack confidence in South Africa? Is it a black thing?” No, it’s not a black thing. It’s an economic policy thing. It’s a socialism thing. If you’d read my post without wearing the blinkers of preconceived ideas about race and pessimism, you might have spotted this. It’s there, in black and white.

As always a controversial post well worth the read.

I want to be part of the solution, not the problem.

  5. Guy McLaren Says:
    January 20th, 2008 at 15:37

Thats nice, Eskom will pay a portion of something that most South Africans can not afford.

In fact it is estimated that 17% of home owners will lose their homes in the next 12 months due to interest rate hikes, and you and Eskom want us to get yet more credit?

Richard, Theres looking at stuff with blinkers and reality. Eskom are destroying the country and that is to do with bad management despite the race of the individuals involved.

It is a crisis, and needs resolving. Mbeki and his team of leftists has fucked up. Its time we had people with half a brain in charge, and I don’t give a shit what colour they are, as long as they do the fucking job.

You are misinformed. Actually, the energy crisis was caused in large part by Enron and not because there were not enough generating stations. There were even documented occasions where Enron energy traders called into the power generating stations in California to “pretend” that they had to shut down for overhauling. The traders did this to create spikes in energy prices so that they could make even more money.

In SA we do not have enough generators. In the US they have plenty.

  7. Richard Catto Says:

Guy, if people who have the bux install solar heating, it would reduce the demand on the national grid.

That’s the problem that has to be solved – lessen demand.

If demand can be lessened enough there will be sufficient electricity to power those who can’t afford to install solar heat.

For example, the mini-nuclear reactor solution costs in the region of R21 million. Obviously, the people who would install such a solution is heavy industry, or iow, people who can afford it.

    Do you get it now?

  8. Richard Catto Says:
    January 20th, 2008 at 16:44

Obaht, go read the wikipedia article.

The details of which company did what wrong (in CA) are irrelevant.

What is relevant is that CA State authorities fucked up in the first place by creating the situation that Enron then exploited.

The point in my article, and read it again if you need to, is not that the SA government has fucked up (that is undisputed), but that I am optimistic that the situation can be rectified.

This goes directly against what the purveyors of doom and gloom are saying, which is that things are terminally fucked.

  11. Bongi Says:
    January 20th, 2008 at 21:35

at the author of the post.
to simply equate complaints with racism against a black government is sad. i would imagine that in a country that is democratic it should be our right or even obligation to express objections when needed. i’ll be ingenious as he suggests but i will not stick my head in the sand like the whole mbeki crowd (author included) and pretend there is no power crisis and that they didn’t mess up by listening to the people warning them.
haven’t we seen from the anc election that that sort of ostrich mentality that the mighty mbeki perfected is no longer accepted?
i almost expect the author to go ahead and explain that the aids denialism was also right and to disagree with that is also racist. and thoughts on manto? or would that be both racist and sexist?

  12. Richard Catto Says:
    January 20th, 2008 at 22:31

Okay, Bongi, I think you need to realise that I am not a Mbeki supporter. I am definitely not apologising for the current stuff up.

But what I am saying is that the people who are writing off SA as a lost cause are being extremely pessimistic.

The point of my post is to express my opinion that as bad as the mess is, I have faith that we will find solutions to it. I am also hopeful that new government leadership will reverse the setbacks and get us back on track again.

  14. Obaht Says:

    catto,

Allow me to rephrase. South Africa is not a first world country and we can all agree on that. The US is a first world country although some may disagree on that. But the point is that the US has plenty of electricity except for the occasional power failure and brownout. You cannot compare a third world country like SA to the US.

In California we see that: “These blackouts occurred mainly as a result of manipulation by traders and marketers. By withholding energy and shutting down generators, frenzy appeared in the market and energy prices climbed higher on the West Coast. Enron traders were revealed as intentionally encouraging the removal of power from the market during California’s energy crisis by encouraging suppliers to shut down plants to perform unnecessary maintenance, as documented in recordings made at the time.[4] These acts contributed to the need for rolling blackouts, which adversely affected many businesses dependent upon a reliable supply of electricity, and inconvenienced a large number of retail consumers.”

    California.27s_deregulation_and_subsequent_energy_crisis

Greedy energy traders at Enron caused the problem in California, not corrupt government officials. In South Africa we can only hope that something like that could take place where we have so much power that we can manipulate it to our own ends.

Again, SA’s power grid is decaying rapidy before our very eyes due to gross incompetence and not due to the fact that a person is black or white.

  15. Joon Says:
    January 21st, 2008 at 08:46

During 2001, Brazil also faced a major power crisis – a rationing system was put in place to reduce the use of energy with 20 percent. A household were allowed a 500 kilowatt ration per week and if not adhering to these regulations, a hefty fine or a six day without power were the citizens prospects.

It is a harsh solution to build up reserves but we need to save power – how many people do not use their elictricity sparingly and by going greener a huge reduction in the consumption of energy is inevitable.

We should stop moaning and start saving. The only other thing I can add is that the “powers” that be should enforce load shedding as a preventitive measure rather than curing. If load shedding is done every day for say 1 or 2 hours at exactly the same time for the same groups, a certain routine can be worked out. This will make lives easier, traffic can be predicted and shops and small businesses can change their hours.

The element of surprise is surprisingly enough one of the major problems.

  16. Grant Walliser Says:
    January 21st, 2008 at 09:33

The fact that the energy crisis in California lasted only 3 years seems to indicate that it had less to do with generation capacity and more to do with price tampering. Generation capacity takes way longer than 3 years to beef up.

In addition, I find it strange that you feel the need to protect those who have made the mess simply because you perceive that the response is racist. It is a fairly forgiving but condecsending and paternalistic standpoint. Would you be so understanding if the decision makers had all been white? I hope so but I doubt it.

We have dropped the ball here and even though I agree that plans will be made, people need to let those in charge know that we are not pleased. Colour has no bearing. Regardless of what we do, it is going to be a tougher time for SA simply because of bad planning. Heads should roll – whatever their colour.

Obaht, of course I can compare SA with the US. I can compare anything with anything, and you are free to object as much as you like.

I feel that it really does not matter WHY CA experienced its electricity crisis. They could have all the power in the Universe, but if its not available to consumers, it’s the same as if they had none.

Their energy crisis persisted for close on 3.5 years. How long has SA had an elec crisis? About two months so far.

You claim that SA’s national power grid is rapidly decaying before our eyes. Do you have a cite for that?

  21. Richard Catto Says:
    January 21st, 2008 at 14:45

Bongi, sure I appreciate your right to criticise and I am also critical along with you.

I want to differentiate, though, between being critical and choosing to write off an entire country as being substandard and no longer worth staying in or investing in.

I look at events in the US and the UK where those countries were both subject to terrorist attacks. Generally, their populations rallied in patriotism. They didn’t announce that their own countries were for shit and said that they were leaving.

The only example of that that I can think of was of a few left-wing American celebs who announced that if George W. Bush won the 2004 election, they’d move to France. Well he won, and they stayed anyway.

Maybe it’s a third world phenomenon that when things go wrong, the rats flee? I’m unsure. Perhaps you have some thoughts on that?

The Western Cape had a much more serious power shortage problem in early 2006 for a few months because both of Koeberg’s Unit One and Two power generating units went offline.

Unit One went offline in Dec 2005 for a few months and Unit Two went offline for a day or two in Nov 2006.

Both of those caused loss of power in the Western Cape. Those problems were addressed. I believe that the current problem will also be addressed rapidly.

  26. Obakeng, The Chief Says:

    Allow my 2 cents worth:

Richard, I am black, and to be honest, i am ashamed at some of my African leaders. As you know, most African governments are being run by blacks, and the leaders, what do they have to show for it: GREED, CORRUPTION, LACK OF DELIVERY OF ELECTORAL PROMISES AND “WILL DO ANYTHING TO CLING TO POWER” Mentality.

SA apparantely, is just the same. The ANC government looked out for number 1, themselves. Look, i am proud of my country and my continent, despite its more downs than ups. But our leaders need to be called to account.

And people are starting to realise that, they have put material, wealth seeking people into power. I don’t know, maybe some bloggers’ perogative is to bring SA down, to paint all black people as unintelligent and lacking, that however is not my style.

I, as a blogger, am highlighting and reminding the ANC, that they are not delivering what they promised us they’ll do. And i 100% certain, that there are people in there who can govern and make this country prosper!!!

In order for us to find solutions, wouldn’t you agree that we have to know the root of the problem first??? For our files???

Yes, i find it absolutely unacceptable that we should be too pessimistic about our country. But we also have to be realistic as well.

And like you say, power cuts saga is not doom and gloom, it is ridiculous for people to even think this. I grew up with candles for a good 12 years of my life!

Well here is one way they cope:

“Six Metrorail motor coaches and 18 trailer coaches were destroyed on Friday after angry commuters torched trains at four stations when they were kept waiting for two hours during a power failure.”
    http://www.thetimes.co.za/News/Article.aspx?id=688978

  38. Richard Catto Says:

No. I don’t think South Africa will go down like those countries did.

The ANC Polokwane Conference sent a clear message to government that they will be voted out if they fail to deliver.

Mbeki has failed SA in so many irrational ways. He’s a kook. He lost his grip on reality when he chose to blunder down the HIV conspiracy blind alley.

His irrational handling of Manto and her deputy just frustrated the nation.

Mbeki is a frustrating arsehole because he does not make sane rational decisions. He is impossible to fathom or trust with our future.

People are fed up. So ANC delegates voted him out. Ordinary South Africans burn trains.

It’s a clear message people are sending, that they’re frustrated and tired of being fucked around by incompetent bastards.

They’re telling the government to get their shit together or we are gonna burn your house down.

I support that. They must be made to feel the pain of the ordinary person. If they cannot govern and they refuse to step aside, then they must be overthrown.

In that respect, I believe in Revolution to cure social problems created by incompetent leaders.

I have heard through a friend of mine with high level connections to Eskom that that the current Eskom problem is not because of electricity generating capacity problems.

The actual problem at Eskom has more to do with the loss of skilled people. I think they need about 900 engineers as of yesterday if you catch my drift?

Could it be that the problem has more to do with incompetence than with the increase of usage over the last 10 years?

Wade, it is clear to everyone how deeply racist you are. You’re so damn in denial about it too.

Every time, I challenge whiteys about their racism, your hernia pops out and you start limping around my blog trying to convince us how it is not a colour thing, and failing miserably, because the first word out of your horrid little mouth is A P A R T H E I D which no-one must mention anymore, because you just want to move on.

Well as I said before, no-one is going anywhere. No-one is moving on, until little white punk asses like you get down on your knees and kiss black ass and beg for their forgiveness.

I’m staying in SA because I dig it here. Since you don’t, I think it’s time for you to fuck off and go whine and bitch to some limeys about all the troubles you had “back in Africa”.

    Buh bye. Waaade.

  60. Richard Catto Says:

it will be a cold day in hell before I kiss anyone’s backside.

I’m taking that as an admission of your racism.

Why won’t you take responsibility for your role in Apartheid? Why do you want everyone to move on and forgive your white ass, whilst in the same breath you cry about black criminals targeting white people?

And to top it all off, you advocate sabotaging SA by calling for the 2010 FIFA World Cup to be held elsewhere.

So, tell us again how you’re not a racist. Tell us again how you are an SA patriot.

    We’re all ears, Wade.

  61. Richard Catto Says:

In a couple of weeks we are winging our way overseas to check it out.

The fact is we pay our taxes and we should get our services. Why should we be penalized and have to spend OUR money on buying expensive solar powered junk?

The ANC were warned to build power stations 10 years ago. They even apologized to us recently for this mistake and now we have to pay for it.

Our business is losing money hand over fist and we are sick of it and are not going to take it anymore! SHAME on you ANC for your recklessness and your corruption! You are pathetic!

SOme here are OK with turning off geysers, living with only one light in the house, and cranking a hand generator to get a couple of volts. Don’t be stupid! The real world does not live like that. Oh I forgot, we are really a third world country so I suppose it’s OK.

  65. Obaht Says:

Believe me we have not seen the worst yet! (Not to mention the disgusting Eskom gravytrain.)

Quote: “By last year Eskom was unable to fully supply itself with coal, and started to outsource, naturally enough, to “black economic empowerment” companies who only know rudimentary things about coal mining. Eskom’s coal stocks are now good only for days, rather than months.

Chaos is the order of the day. As generators have failed at Eskom, or been taken down for “maintenance”, so other generators have been over-worked by turbines spinning above nameplate capacity.”

    http://www.moneyweb.co.za/mw/view/mw/en/page84?oid=187078&sn=Detail

I shudder to think what will happen if Koeberg “goes down for maintenance”!

Perhaps singiswa can start an informal roadside store to sell hand cranked generators made of car tires and coathangers.

    How Eskom blew it:

    http://www.moneyweb.co.za/mw/view/mw/en/page662?oid=187937&sn=Detail

Special quote from consultants letter for simgiswa and catto to show that the whites are responsible as well. Racism is NOT a factor:

“We warned them that over the long term it would kill Eskom. We gave them five years. Well it took longer; 10 years. Now we the public are having to bear this cost because of a short-term view top management had.

“Let me tell you they were all white managers, so please do not blame the black management of Eskom. They were not part of that ridiculous decision. And of course the power station managers’ other part of their performance contract was AA appointments.”

  67. Marko Says:

Can you believe that 500 people were stranded on top of Table Mountain the other day due to a ‘load shed’?
Yes, before you shout at me Tim and Richard, the cable car system should have a backup generator for unforseen and accidental outages. It is definitely not a sustainable solution.
I don’t know how you think this ‘crisis’ is going to be resolved quickly Richard.
Remember that most of our power is already ‘dirty’ power, ie. it comes from coal mines. This is also definitely *not* sustainable.
Hell now we might even have a problem with wet coal: http://www.busrep.co.za/index.php?fArticleId=4219989
Don’t even talk to me about nuclear power, Eskom has already demonstrated their incompetence in that field at Koeberg.
I find it amazing that only now Mbeki is demanding explanations from Eskom. Maybe if he wasn’t so busy flitting around the globe he would have noticed the lights off at home.
Just two years ago he denied there even was a problem: http://business.iafrica.com/news/69047.htm

Yes Tim, we should all have solar heating for our water but this will take time before a significant difference in load is made.
In the meantime the demand for electricity will only increase anyway.

Hey Tim, have you done your bit, have you installed solar heating? Richard?

  68. Richard Catto Says:

Marko, we already know that Mbeki screwed up. Hence him being voted out.

Why don’t you just wait and see how the power problem is going to be solved.

I believe that answers are going to be found.

I, personally, am not installing solar heat for a number of reasons, chief of which is that I cannot afford to.

    TRANSPARENCY IN THE DARK

The recent power outages have managed to expose the inability of the ANC to govern this country. Up to now the ANC has simply side-stepped or refused to answer to issues such as AIDS,death of babies in hospitals, poverty, corruption,non-delivery etc, etc, etc, but now there is simply no way to hide their ineffiency. And the best yet: ALL THOSE ANC FATCATS ARE ALSO EXPERIENCING THE SAME DISCOMFORT AND FRUSTRATION AS THE REST OF THE CITIZENS. Finally, in some weird way, the truth has been brought to light!!!! Hopefully all those who had voted for this liberation movement during the previous elections will now realise that it takes more than a few ex-military men to run a country IN A RESPONSIBLE WAY! It was in the past when we wanted you to defy apartheid iniquitous and unjust laws by doing what you arte doing now and now things are different since you must now heal wounds that were inflicted by apartheid and individual whites.

how can you be beaten by a foreigner like the Biels who quietly implemented their reconciliation and healing projects from their own pockets with a big smile on their faces and then retreated to watch those wounds being healed as blacks benefit from that project.

You see,Wade is reliving wounds by {my hatred for rapists, murderers, hijackers, people with aids who rape babies in order to cleanse themselves is not a black thing, promise. If a white person}making these uterances since this is how i was made to look under apartheid hence the term”swaart gevaar”and he should now be apologising for those terms and letting everyone knows that it was apartheid propaganda.

Leave blacks alone and get together with a group of friends “whites”and come-up with your own programme of reconciling that will impact black environments.

to shout that i {marko}will never wash your feet etc is reactionary in itself since i was only showing you an example of what you can do to demonstrate your commitment to the process of “reconciliation and healing”.Yes,it is on record that whites played a major role in the wars that sprang-up in the continent with the intention of destabilising and sabotaging and that frremasons do infiltrate and intervene in affdairs of countries so i have a stromg reason to question if the freemasons or colonialists or missionaries did not play any role in this outtage thing.and you will have to tell me here as to their agreeing to build more power stations and then renege was that not an attempt to sabotage mbeki`s administration….!

Dude, you are reading too many conspiracy websites. Why can’t you accept the fact that the ANC is incompetent.

Allow me to repeat, for those ill-informed people like yourself, that 10 years ago they were warned to build more power stations. They did not. Period.

The freemasons, the knights-templar, the secret seven, the famous five, or the global cabal of little green martians did not renege or sabotage the building of power stations.

So by Richard apologising on a blog, that to you is ‘the whole hog’? That simple? Wow.

I’m not even going to comment on your crap about the Biehl family.
At the very least show some respect and spell their last name correctly, seeing how much you bleat about others using your last name.

    > “Leave blacks alone…”
Oh dear, did I touch a nerve by telling you I have black friends and socialise with them?
Shame, do you really hate whites that much that you can’t stand us being friends?

Of course I am being reactionary to your ‘wash my feet’ crap, what do you expect?
Stop blaming the current generation of white people and sitting around waiting for somebody to kiss your ass.
We are just trying to get on with our shit while dealing with crap like violence in our suburbs, load shedding etc.,
just like every other sane South African.

You are the one that said that no comments should be allowed here unless they are offering a solution to the problem but yet again you steer the topic towards your stupid conspiracy bullshit.

Let me help you here. Eskom is a state-owned company. It belongs to the people and is run by government. As such it falls under the portfolio of our esteemed Minister of Minerals and Energy. It is therefore his responsibilty ok? It is the president’s responsibility to make sure that this guy is doing his job.
They fucked up, plain and simple – no matter how much you carp on about freemasons or mafia etc. etc.

So, all of us (except of course Tim, who seems to be on rat poison) agree that government dropped the ball on this one. What happened to accountability?

Just for you Tim, here’s my suggestion for the day: Insulate the pipes coming from your geyser, much energy is lost due to dissipation of heat between the geyser and the tap.’Thermaflex’ pipe insulation can be had from any builder’s supply store, or ask your plumber.

DAVID,BALSDON IS AN ARCH-RACIST AND NO APOLOGIES SHOULD BE FORTHCOMING FOR THAT.

GO BACK AND PERUSE HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS BLOG AND ENLIGHTEN YOURSELF BEFORE YOU MAKE THE ABOVE ACCUSATIONS.POOR RICHARD IS PROBABLY DRAINED-OUT BY HIS PUERILE AND PUKISH DIATRIBE HE HAS BEEN SPEWING HERE.

HE PUT RICHARD ON THE ALTAR FOR HIS POLITICAL CONVERSIONS AND HE DOESN`T WANT TO HEAR RICHARD`S VIEWS BUT WANT TO PRESSURE HIM TO CHANGE HIS MORAL STANCE AND BECOME A CONSERVATIVE LIKE HIM.

HE DENIED THAT WHEN HE REFER TO MURDERERS,RAPISTS AND ROBBERS HE REFERS TO BLACKS BUT CONTRADICTED HIMSELF WHEN HE ASSERTED THAT IF HE CAN COME ACCROSS WHITE PERPETRATORS HE`LL BE EQUALLY CONDEMNATORY MEANING THAT AT THIS STAGE HE WAS INDEED REFFERRING TO BLACKS AND HE IS A ROTTEN APPLE WHO IS TRYING TO INFECT OTHERS AND SO RICHARD IS JUSTIFIED IN BOOTING HIM OUT.

Obaht, I see no reason to censor Tim.

I very rarely censor people. When I do it is because they are harassing me personally (or others without good cause) or just generally leaving dumbass comments.

I tolerate them for awhile, then I warn them and if they continue to sing the same tune, I start deleting them. If that doesn’t persuade them onto a new course, I go ahead and unapprove all the comments they have ever made on here and that means none of their comments gets automatically published.

I’ve had one person like that so far.

    From cecil:

sorry to be the nasty one. I was never a racist, i voted YES and I voted for the ANC in 1994 hoping they will really bring change and hope.

For an Arikaans whitey from Potch University it was quite wild. I prayed that it will work out and worked for the Gauteng government to help bring change. Sadly, like the rest of Africa they feathered their nests and filled their pockets. Newly appointed ANC government officials demanded R20 000-00 bribes at lunches (paid by the consultants)for projects.

City of JHB stopped approving housing developments in specific areas because of no electricity. The rest is a joke.

Then I worked in Nigeria for 2 years, helping to establish MTN there. Every single Abu, Kola and Babo in Nigeria had to rely on a small Japanese generator filled with blackmarket petrol to charge their MTN Nokia cell phones and run their Korean fridges to sell plastic bags filled with cold water.

The big cronies drove around in black bulletproof Mercedes Gelandewagens. Sorry, Africa is a joke and the joke is on every political correct dude with his hemp T-shirt and Xhosa girlfriend.

If after 52 years of freedom Nigeria, with all its oil and mineral wealth could not even get electricity supply to it people how the hell will the ANC get it right.

My advice: Buy a generator running on diesel, invest in a 2000liter fuel tank, hook it up and hope that the organic tomatos your Xhosa girlfriend grows will go well with the goat meat her father sends from Transkei ~ that is, if the taxi makes it on the high quality roads build since “freedom”.

Africa is a joke but the joke is on the poor people living there.

Reading the comments on this blogsite one becomes aware of the extent of the damage done in this country. The racism from both sides is so overwhelming that one has to remind oneself that we are not actually at war with each other! Scary to think that our children are growing up with our distorted fears and anger imprinted on them.

It should be clear by now that the current situation in this country is close to boiling point. The present and future energy crisis might just be the spark that sets this republic ablaze, because it is certain to have major negative effects in all areas of life. We should stop blaming and start doing, because the whites won’t go away and the blacks wont go away and our racism wont go away. The only thing that can save this country from a racist fuelled war is a true leader (of any colour)who has intelligence, but above all compassion.

Unfortunately the list of possible candidates for this highly demanding job seems to be a blank sheet at this stage. What are we going to do?

I have come to the understanding that most whites are not welcome in Africa except as tourists or investors, and even then they are suspect to some degree. For example, even that multi millioniare in Zimbabwe – Van Hoogenstraten was arrested and he LOVED mugabe!

I suppose most whites in SA can’t be trusted.

We are going to miss South Africa deeply.

“I have come to the understanding that most whites are not welcome in Africa except as tourists or investors”

Exactly. You’re getting there, my boy.

Slowly yet surely the world is seeing through the fake images of black tolerance (of Whites). Make no mistake about it, this will affect not only the way the White world views Africa, but also, and more importantly in my opinion how it views blacks in its own backyard. The downward spiral of South Africa into another Zimbabwe (or better yet, another Kenya) will convince many Whites of the necessity of getting rid of their resident parasites — by deporting them to where they came from. Isn’t that the chief complaint about slavery – how blacks were brought to the new world from their “homelands” against their own will ? About time we gave them the justice they deserve, hey.

I understand that Hitler was ravaged with syphilis in his last couple of years which is why he did what he did. He was also paranoid and thought that the free-masons were trying to sabotage the German economy. I also remember reading once that, in his dying breath, Hitler kept repeating: “YOU ARE NOT IN GERMANY BUT IN SIBERRRRIIIIAAAA!YOU LOOK LIKE SIIBEERRRIIIAAANNNNSSS TOOOOOO!!!!!!1.

That’s something you will enjoy benefits from long after the energy crisis is over.catto,

If a bridge were to collapse, for instance, I’m certain that a million or more unhappy South Africans would make odious comparisons between our country and first world countries. but you never know.

He was the same guy who wrote that you are an oxygen thief. You really are a stupid individual singiswad.

Bullard used to LOVE the ANC and now look what he is writing about them:

    http://www.thetimes.co.za/Columnists/Article.aspx?id=696409

“I’m sure the African National Congress is good at many things, but running a country isn’t one of them. Before you write in to complain that I hate the ANC, allow me to point out that in this very column on March 2 1997, I was so enamoured of the ANC that I wrote that I would vote for it if there were a general election tomorrow.

So I don’t hate the ANC, but I do hate what it has become. I look at Kenya and see precisely the same ingredients for the cocktail of violence and mayhem there as I see here. It’s a matter of time.

Far from the breath of democratic fresh air we had all hoped and prayed for, the ANC has become a malodorous, toxic cloud of corruption and greed.

When the ANC put in place such institutions as the Public Protector and the Scorpions, I genuinely thought they intended them to be the checks and balances of a sophisticated democratic system. Now they are talking about disbanding the Scorpions and the reason is plain for all to see; they have been much too efficient and have fingered too many powerful figures.

The Mbeki government has been tolerant of fraud, dishonesty and incompetence within its ranks. The ANC’s very own Amy Winehouse, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, is widely acknowledged to be absolutely useless at her job, but she enjoys royal-game status from the President and can’t be sacked. We can only speculate as to the reason for this.

The ANC seems hellbent on bringing South Africa down to the level of the rest of Africa. Despite their constant protestations about “offensive African stereotyping”, they are doing a pretty good job of suggesting that Africans are incapable of running a country.

Jacob Zuma, who has done for South Africa’s international image what Borat has done for Kazakhstan, may well be the country’s next president, despite facing charges of racketeering, corruption, money laundering, tax evasion and fraud. His supporters have already promised a bloodbath if the verdict goes the wrong way and some of those supporters now hold high office within the ANC.

In addition to the lamentable state of the party’s morality and its fondness for cosying up to crooks and gangsters, there are also more practical considerations to take into account. Thanks to a lack of planning, we no longer have enough electricity to run the country. Whatever Alec Erwin may say, that has to have a negative effect on the economy. Not only will it result in job losses but it can’t be tempting for foreigners to do business in this country if we don’t have power.

Our main roads and pavements are in a shocking state of disrepair with potholes now becoming craters. The reason for this is simple: the money that should have gone on maintaining what was a very good road network has been mysteriously diverted. Piles of uncollected garbage decorate our traffic intersections, our state schools and hospitals are an embarrassment and the fight against crime isn’t helped by knowing that the country’s top cop has been batting for the other side.

Sometimes I think the good guys are in with a chance but then something happens and I am reluctantly forced to change my mind. It’s not so much “The Dream Deferred” as “The Dream Defiled”. I don’t know how this movie ends, but at the moment the bad guys are definitely winning.”

    Hey singiswad,

I’ve got a good idea. Before you move back to the Transkei, why don’t you join the “power police” and swing by my home in Upper Constantia to see if we are using too much electricity? That way you can report us to the us to the authorities and have us arrested and thrown in jail for wasting electricity!

    You moron!

PS. We are selling our home to a Nigerian who has been led to believe that SA’s future is so brigth that he has to wear shades. I suppose SA’s a HUGE a step up from Nigeria.

“Eskom and the department of minerals and energy affairs are preparing to unleash “power police” into the country’s suburbs to get citizens to save electricity.

The “power police” will also ask residents to be “their eyes and ears” and report those wasting electricity.”

    Hey singiswad,

Maybe you should move to the west like the rest of all the educated Africans are doing:

“Hundreds of thousands of African professionals are currently working outside the continent…for instance there are reports that more than 2 000 Nigerian doctors work in the United States, even though there continues to be a critical need for health professionals in Nigeria and the rest of our continent,” said the president.

Mr Mbeki went on to say that there are reportedly more Sierra Leonean doctors living in the Chicago area than in Sierra Leone. An estimated 600 Ghanaian doctor’s work in New York City and more than 1 000 professionals left Zimbabwe for other countries in 1997.

Shockingly, he pointed out, there are more African-born scientists and engineers working in the US than there are in Africa.

Between 1960 and 1987 it is estimated that Africa lost a third of its professionals to developed countries.

Some 23 000 academics and 50 000 middle and senior management personnel leave the continent every year, he said, adding more than 40 000 Africans with PhDs now live outside of the continent.

The president highlighted that the highest skill migratory flow patterns from Africa indicate that Egypt, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Ethiopia have witnessed the greatest skill losses.”

On second thoughts, perhaps you are not educated enough to move to the west.

You say you had no electricity in the townships in the past before the handover. Well you are going to see that coming back in your lifetime. You say that you like what is going on in Zimbabwe. Again, you will witness this in your lifetime.

The truth is that many people of all stripes and colours and who are educated and get a degree or technical education leave Africa. The only people who seem to want to do anything with Africa are the Chinese, your new master.

Like Mugabe, you will be licking their boots asking for handouts because you are not capable of running a country since you are so corrupt.

As I said before, we are planning on taking our expertise to the west where we will be appreciated. After that I will be looking at the news from time to time watching how you struggle and live your miserable existence.

You are a parasitic maggot singiswad. The thing about maggots is that they love corruption and decay because they feed off of it and thrive in it. And like you, maggots don’t even know that they ARE maggots. They just exist.

    Hey singiswad,

Regarding the “Jewel of Africa – Kenya”, this one’s for you:

“With Sudan and Somalia in turmoil to the north, and the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe in ruins to the south and west, the loss of Kenya would prove a devastating blow to the safety and prosperity of the continent, bringing chaos to a huge swathe of East Africa.

The signs are not encouraging. More than 300,000 people have been driven from their homes. Much of the country is under siege. Roads have been blocked by mobs hunting tribal enemies. Some victims have been beheaded. Others have been hacked to death with machetes.

Gangs are roaming the streets, stopping vehicles and killing people suspected of being members of an enemy tribe. Unable to get troops into affected areas, army helicopters have resorted to strafing gangs with machine-gun fire to protect women and children from attack.

In the past five days, at least 100 people have died, although the true death toll is undoubtedly higher. Much of the killing has been in outlying areas, away from the eyes of aid workers and journalists.

I watched one night as a Kikuyu man was abducted by a gang armed with clubs and hustled away to deserted wasteland. I don’t know what became of him as the group was lost in the darkness.

Rape is used as an instrument of terror. In one township, a gang of thugs, high on drink and drugs, seized eight women and held them in a burned-out building, raping them time and again. Doctors say victims are being sexually assaulted and made to hack members of their own families with machetes.

The situation has chilling overtones of Rwanda. In the worst genocide since the Holocaust, up to one million Tutsis were murdered by Hutu neighbours in the tiny, mountainous country during a four-month period in 1994.”

I wonder if this could ever happen is SA?

    What do you think singiswad?

As Kenya descends into anarchy, there’s no sign of an end of the tribal bloodshed

Bullard is the oxygen thief and a waster of bytes. I’ve read his blog just a few times but couldn’t stay longer lest his retardation infect my soul.

Yes, I carried an R4 assault rifle in Mbekweni in 1986. I got to be surrounded by Boer officers who called my English officer a “kaffir boetie” because he was friendly towards the South Africans he was there to protect against crime.

I also witnessed two Boer SAP members mercilessly beating a South African man who happened to be drunk, while they violently threw him into the back of their van. I wanted to open fire on them.

The only people I ever wished / strongly desired to shoot when I was in the army were Boers. Hateful little shits when in power.

I was there and I saw these things with my own eyes. The Boers did not win my heart and mind and soul to their cause, in fact, they turned me against them when I observed who and what they are.

I’m glad I was there to see it. It informed me. They educated me as to their heartlessness, their callousness and their infamy.

Good people win. Bad people lose. And that is why the Boer lost political power in South Africa. Because they were bad news.

FW de Klerk was the best Boer political leader and he did what he knew he had to do – he abdicated political power. He gave away the Boer’s political power because he knew in his heart of hearts that they did not deserve it.

I’d rather sit in darkness, hungry with FREEDOM, than with all the electricity in the world and be nothing but a caged animal, hanging off the leash of the Boer.

I’m saying that for better or for worst, I’m behind the New South Africa ALL THE WAY!

I’m still trying to discover what makes some South Africans so disloyal to their country. For instance, when things go wrong in first world countries, you don’t get people condemning their own country and pronouncing it a shithole and vowing to leave (permanently).

They tend to pull together and become patriotic. The closest example to unpatriotism I have seen amongst Americans, for example, was some left wingers threatening to move to France should George Bush win a second term. Well he won, and they stayed.

All manner of disaster, both natural and terrorist, and still the people remain proud of their country. Even when they hate their government they LOVE THEIR COUNTRY!

Why can’t South Africans be like that? What the fuck is wrong with some of us? Why are they so damned ungrateful and unwilling to pitch in and make this country great?

In that respect, I think it’s best that the unpatriotic whiners should go and take their negativity with them.

But if you elect to remain, then I say we should be proud of ourselves, our country and our Rainbow Nation. Dammit, we are the BEST AFRICAN country!

We must pitch in to solve our problems not bitch about them. Let’s build our nation! And let’s face our own personal responsibility in respect of past injustices and not avoid them. Own them. Own this country. Own your future here.

We should all be proud that we were born here and not elsewhere, because we are SOUTH AFRICANS!

In the past when we{blacks}encounter people like Richard we used to support and encourage them all the way by sustaining their view and looking at the situation now i`m in no doubt that Richard is somehow disappointed by the mentalities, approaches and behaviours and attitudes of blacks where they contribute nothing to this country ion terms of development and advancement.

I think if we would have blacks like hawkers and taxis taking charge of safeguarding and developing cbd`s and designing buildings and statues this would have given Richard more impetus to fight his cause because he would have been arguing the wrongness of the Boers in condemning blacks as inferior and underdeveloped.

Our country does not have a pledge and there`s not a single black who is busy designing a pledge.all these negatives about blacks can backlash against Ricfhard`s striving for an egalitarian society since the boers can turn around and argue “we were right all along” in asserting that the black man should be a labourer since now blacks are not developmental but waiting for the white man to do everything.

Wade, that`s precisely what I have been badgering you of to set-up projects for a social responsibility programme or striving for an egalitarian society:{Maybe there should be workshops to deal with past hatred for black people and white people}.You see W ade if you adop that tone then you and I can be on good talking terms.

Richard is dead right about whites from south africa unable to get asylum in America.

I am a columnist and radio-talk show host. I came to America in 2001. Six months later I married an American. At his insistence, we immediately began the process of acquiring a Green Card. To this end, my husband and I made countless trips to a Russian Immigration Lawyer in Philadelphia. As my sponsor, my husband had to provide proof of his ability to support me. Bank records and tax returns were demanded. I had to provide details of my employers for the past ten years. Then there were the affidavits, certificates of birth, marriage, photographs of us in happy times etc.

I was fingerprinted and photographed (specifically with my ears showing). I was blood-tested and AIDS tested and psychologically profiled by a designated doctor.

On December 13th, exactly as per the movie “Green Card,” we went for our final interview in Callowhill, Philadelphia. There, we were asked the predictable questions which would provide evidence that we were a bona fide married couple.

The interviewing officer was entirely satisfied. In response to his statement “I can tell you are a married couple” I quipped “Do we look that bored?”

He promised us that the Green Card would be issued “within weeks.” The reason for the delay, he said, was “because of 911.” The FBI are requiring “extra precautions.”

There is something no doubt ironic in the fact that 911 is my birthday.

A year later the Green Card still remained elusive. Every attempt to find out its status quo was thwarted. No information is given by telephone from Callowhill Road in Philadelphia. You have a choice; drive to Philadelphia and join a line that stretches around the block. Then subject yourself to being searched (“Cap OFF!”) and take your chances with an obnoxious official who will decide your fate on a whim. Or so it seems.

“Clear the room! Clear the room! All information needed can be accessed via the website!” bawls an official who seems to be gleeful about your misery.

In any event, his claims about the ease with which you can access information are adjacent to the truth. Despite the unashamed demands of money for information on the internet, (I recall the amount to be $50.00 for each time you attempt to access the site), I was left no better informed. The e-mail response that “We will respond by mail within the next few days.” is simply not true. They don’t.

Time dragged by. While waiting for the Green Card to be processed, my Employment Authorization Card expired. The Russian lawyer’s telephone was now disconnected. Curiously. I am the first person to baulk at conspiracies, but it did occur to me that the swiftness with which he took our money and then failed to deliver the Green Card, made me wonder how many other desperate Green Card seekers have been fleeced by lawyers who then ‘disappear’ into the ether. I also wondered, come to think of it, why it was that no-one in his office could speak English.

In the meantime my International Driving License had expired. I was told by the Motor Vehicle Bureau that due to the incomplete status of my Green Card application, I could not apply for an American License.

After some six weeks of marriage I realized that I had married a violent and controlling man. My marriage became increasingly abusive. Isolated physically, and mentally abused, my life was a nightmare. Marriage counseling didn’t work. The psychiatrist saw my shocking state and warned of total collapse. My husband’s rages were frightening. He would kick doors in and overturn heavy coffee tables. Once he nearly killed my Pomeranian. I took to sleeping in an attic room in the Mill we lived in, with a hay-ladder propped against the door.

My husband’s narcissism was such that he demanded utter obedience and 100% attention. Any imagined slight to his ego was punishable by the most extreme means.

He now started using the Green Card as a threat and his violence towards me escalated.

Most rows ended up with him threatening to throw me out in the street and “forget about your Green Card.”

The police became regular visitors to our home. Finally I was admitted to Doylestown Hospital. While at the hospital, I was CAT-scanned, extensively blood-tested and counseled by a psychiatrist. The diagnosis was bleeding ulcers and an abusive husband.

Soon after I was released from the hospital I left the marital home, fearing for my life.

Six months after leaving him, my husband made good his threat about seeing me out on the streets with no work and no Green Card.

He withdrew his petition of support for the Green Card.

It remains a deep mystery how having pledged to support me in the application for the Green Card, he could withdraw it because, as he admitted to the judge in court, he “was very, very angry.”

Where, one wonders, in this land, so densely thicketed with laws, are the laws to protect the abused spouse who is legally attempting to obtain a Green Card?

As a columnist and radio talk show host, I had enjoyed considerable public acclaim both in SA and in the UK. Now I find myself in a desperate situation: homeless, jobless and Green Card-less in a foreign land. I have no Medical Insurance, no car and no recourse to any help.

When my husband withdrew his support of the Green Card, the lawyer appointed by my Domestic Violence counselors became very anxious.

“Since he has withdrawn your application for a Green Card you are theoretically stateless and illegally here.” I gazed out of the window of her office and looked at the Latinos meandering down the street, laughing and joking and joshing each other and wondered if I would wake up from this nightmare to find I haven’t done my geography homework.

She advised me to see a lawyer who specialized in Green Card cases. I went to see Mr Large Fromage, borrowing the $80 for the initial consultation.

Mr LF boasted a great deal about his successes and told me that he would have to have $7000.00 up front in order to take my case. Naturally he couldn’t guarantee that he could deliver.

I returned to my Domestic Violence lawyer. She advised that I retreat to a convent or a women’s shelter, lest my husband’s attempts to get me deported are successful.

I am now applying for the Green Card through a Non-Profit Organization that deals in abused and battered women whose spouse’s have withdrawn their Green Card application support. (This is apparently a common practice employed by spiteful spouses who are seeking revenge for a marriage gone bad or wanting to escape from the Community Property Division laws that exist in certain states by having their foreign brides deported.)

Although this is a noble Non-profit Organization they still require money: $385 dollars to file this, $185 dollars to file that. Why, I wonder, can’t they access the records that the INS already has in their files?

I am now required to undergo another full medical examination – which I must pay for, all over again. I have gone through yet another finger-printing process to get FBI clearance – which I had to pay for all over again. I have had to go to the local police station and PAY $15 for each report filed regarding abuse. How bizarre that the victim has to pay to present proof that they are indeed victims.

Is this not a further form of brutality to visit on an already abused person?

Frankly, I can’t see why my manic husband shouldn’t be required to pay for all the new processing since he was the one who self-admittedly yanked the Green Card petition in anger.

The wheels of “The Bureau of Bureaucracy” turn like molasses laced with laudanum.

I have been in America for four years now. I can’t get a paying job because of not having a Green Card. The lawyer at the Non-Profit Organization has told me that it will be ‘at least six months to a year’ before my Green Card will be processed – that is IF it is successful.

This horror has put me into a deep depression – but of course I can’t get medication for the depression because I don’t have medical insurance.

I have been told by many people to seek employment illegally. Hello?

Maybe I should go to Mexico and wade across the Rio Grande? I might get better treatment.

How curious that there are illegal aliens pouring over the borders, who have instant access to all manner of perks and programs and free cell phones. Some of them have no English whatsoever.

Yet me, with more degrees than a thermometer who is – was – a huge believer in America the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave and who would like nothing more than to contribute to this great nation, is rejected..

What am I missing? Could someone explain? Can someone help me out here?

When 911 happened, I was in awe of the way the nation rose as one in support of the victims of the horror. I proudly wore a t-shirt emblazoned with the legend ‘Proud to Be An American.’

    I no longer wear it.

Yeah, Tim, that account does not surprise me at all. Americans suck buckets.

My political stand point on America is that South Africa should close its doors to Americans and expel all American officials in South Africa and break off all diplomatic ties until America starts treating our citizens with respect.

We offer American citizens a visa waiver program where they can arrive here without a visa and stay here for 3 months. America refuses to reciprocate. They prefer to charge our citizens exorbitant amounts to apply for visas which are routinely turned down. Application fees are not refunded.

I know all about abusive Americans. It’s not just the men, it’s their women too. I was involved with an American woman in 2006 who turned into a shrew very quickly. And it wasn’t just her. I had loads of problems with many of them on an online dating site. Problem is that they just don’t respect Africans. They also refuse to acknowledge that white people born in Africa are Africans.

my feeling its that America does`nt want to be overcrowded by indigent foreigners and end-up with mud on its face like we do in this country where we bend-over backwards to accomodate people and they turn against us-taking us to courts and to Human Rights Watch and the like.

Again, here it sounds like its a question of private lawyers cheating than the government itself.

I don’t believe in countries or borders or visas.

I believe it is one world that we are all citizens of and that the entire planet is our birth right and that we have a right to go wherever we like on this planet and live and work and seek happiness.

The current dispensation of countries which deny people (world citizens) total unrestricted freedom of movement is a gross human rights violation.

Did the original settlers in South Africa, America, Europe need visas to travel to new lands and settle there?

Why did those people have more FREEDOM than current humanity has?

We live like caged animals bound to regions in a day and age where, ironically, technology allows people the ability to travel swiftly to any given place on the globe within days.

Imean this woman at her first departure fronm this country she claimed she was persecuted by the previous governmebnt Intelligence but was not considered.

Her second account was that she was persecuted by Mbeki and his Intelligence but was again turned down.

I mean then it was then there were no borders and no governmets just a barren land but now humans have concluded that there must be borders in order to live safely, peacefully and happily and i mean governments are just managers who are employed by voters to manage the countries and including documenting all who come in-and-out so one has to understand the underlying reasons to do so.

Soapbox > How Eskom blew itSOAPBOXHow Eskom blew it Former Eskom Consultant* 24 January 2008 A former Eskom consultant offers some insight into why SA’s facing an electricity crisis.
Oiginally published in today’s edition of The Citizen.

Please do not use my name as I am a retired Eskom consultant who has been re-employed, and I do not want to be fired. I need to put the record straight for the public.

In 1995 the executive director of power generation, and the power station managers, decided that if they could improve the availability of the stations they would not have to build any other stations.

Hence they decided to cut planned outage work down to 7% from about 15%. This led to station managers having a target of 90% availability, 7% planned and 3% forced outages. This led to managing statistics and not how the plant ran optimally.

They chose not to manage reliability or thermal efficiency, of which reliability is your biggest return on investment. Once you have a high reliability you will automatically improve efficiency, but they chose to ignore people like me and cut maintenance.

We warned them that over the long term it would kill Eskom. We gave them five years. Well it took longer; 10 years. Now we the public are having to bear this cost because of a short-term view top management had.

Let me tell you they were all white managers, so please do not blame the black management of Eskom. They were not part of that ridiculous decision. And of course the power station managers’ other part of their performance contract was AA appointments.

If they asked whites to take early retirement or separation packages they got a bigger bonus.

  185. Richard Catto Says:

See, Wade, that is your basic problem.

You don’t want to live in a so-called Third World country.

You do not accept South Africa (and Africa) as it is. You, like most First Worlders, consider where you live to be inferior.

That is offensive to those of us who do accept and love being right here.

I do not think South Africa is an inferior country in which to live. I love it here. I am a patriotic and loyal South African and I consider those who are unpatriotic to be the scum of the Earth.

And that is why I would rather you unpatriotic lot fuck off as soon as you can and cease subjecting the rest of us to your continual bullshit whining.

Go pick yourself a First World country and go beg and grovel and plead for them to let you in. Until that Great Day dawns it would be absolutely wonderful if all you whiners would just shut the fuck up.

Skilled professionals are deserting in droves

    February 09 2008 at 11:31AM

    By Thabiso Thakali

As President Thabo Mbeki on Friday tried to bring a sense of direction to the issues troubling South Africans, it emerged that large numbers of skilled professionals are considering leaving the country.

This was confirmed by estate agents, removal companies and immigration consultants.

One of them, emigration lawyer Eden Joubert, said people inquiring about quitting South Africa were “split across the race spectrum”.

Many of them were highly qualified professionals, including engineers, who had a potential to start a new life in another country with ease.

Robert Wakeling, of the 4G consulting and international technical recruitment agency, said demand for South African engineers in the international market had doubled in the past five years. “The skills pool in the country is getting smaller,” he said.

The Seeff Properties Group had experienced a rush of people looking for evaluation of their properties this year, according to chairperson Samuel Seeff. His company had received 50 percent more inquiries compared to the same period last year.

“I believe there is a negative sentiment brought about by uncertainty of what the future holds,” said Seeff.

Ronald Ennik, managing director of Pam Golding Properties, said the company had seen a rise in evaluations in the market in 2008 – “but we cannot say this is because people want to leave the country”.

‘There are coloureds and Indian professionals moving abroad as well’
Joubert said many of his clients had lost confidence in the government. “People are worried about the future of their children, their properties and generally about their lifestyles,” he said.

Carla Rodrigues-Schoeman, co-ordinator of Master Movers International, said that since 2004 the company had issued over 700 quotations to clients wanting to move abroad. “Most of these people are skilled, middle to upper class. Some are doctors, veterinarians, boiler makers and engineers – mostly whites.”

King International Movers general manager Rolf Lamers concurred. “Things have suddenly picked up in the export shipments. We are currently doing four times as many jobs as we did in January of the past year,” he said.

Lamers added that many of his clients had cited the current power crisis as a major contributing factor. “It is a story of doom and gloom if you look at who these people are,” he said.

“Although all my clients are overwhelmingly English-speaking white folks, there are coloureds and Indian professionals moving abroad as well.”

But Martin Westhuizen, managing director of Pickfords International Moving and Relocation, said people were increasingly moving abroad for better opportunities and lifestyles.

    Have you considered Poland?

I don’t have kids (yet), but I’m completely happy to raise children in SA.

Secondly why would I be proud to live in a country where adult debate cannot be held without language that you use? You behave like a philistine. Don’t behave and speak like a 2 year old throwing their toys out of the cot. Your reaction assures me that you cannot handle the truth.

So in your dememented thinking, non-whites(blacks, coloureds, indians) who leave SA are opposed to change and that they are wanting to continue their oppression of themselves and other non-whites.

    You really are stupid.

  193. Richard Catto Says:
    February 10th, 2008 at 16:04

Obaht, I believe that the reason many South Africans seek a career outside of South Africa is because earnings potential in Developed Countries is higher than SA.

My brother, Stephen, for instance works for a Cruise Liner company. He has done so since 2002 and he has risen in rank to senior officer status. He earns well. On his last shore leave he investigated the possibilities of obtaining a position in South Africa in the hotel industry and could not find anything that would benefit him as much as he currently does.

So now he is taking two weeks leave soon in Australia to see what he can find there, and if he does, then I’m sure he will apply for permanent residence there and pursue a career in Australia.

Until South Africa is able to pay higher wages to skilled professionals, South Africa will continue to haemorrhage valuable people.

I don’t consider those people to be traitors. I think it is natural for people to seek the best financial gain that they can wherever it may be.

The people I consider to be traitors are those that bad mouth South Africa.

I don’t begrudge my brother seeking the best for himself. He’s doing well and we, his family, are proud of his achievements. We’ll support him wherever he goes.

To do this on a big enouth scale will cost Eskom around 1 Billion Rand but can cause a reduction of between 2000 and 4000 MWatt. This will be enouth so that everyone can have power and continue operations untill they can catch up with building new power stations. So what do you say. Are you willing to allow Eskomto switch off your Geyser over peak periods (1-2) Hours or control Air Conditioner systems with failsave devices.?

Like Anthony Robbins, Shirley MacLean and Deepak Chopra, he follows this pursuit of a “positive mental attitude” but underneath he is like the rest of us, full of doubts and insecurities, and he tries to put on a brave face in spite of overwhelming problems.

The reality is that he is in the business of selling his services and books to people who are looking for answers in an increasingly darker world. That is where his opportunity is coming from.

He offers all sorts of platitudes but no real concrete solutions. I’s sorry I don’t buy what he is selling, although I do recognize that he is trying to make a living like the rest of us. He needs to be careful not to tell people to look for the positive too much because it could end up where they get hurt or killed. For example, if you put your hand in a basket of cobras you will get bitten. There is no Positive Mental Attitude that will prevent that. “The snakes will not bite..the snakes will not bit….”

He offers no real solutions to SA.

    increasingly darker world

    Oh balls, man!

no real concrete solutions. He offers no real solutions to SA.

Well, that’s the job of engineers and politicians, not my, his, or your job.

You foolishly just don’t get it.

Being positive is important, because it dictates constructive action. It motivates people to pitch in and do what they can.

Negative talk, like that which you and others espouse is the entire problem.

The country is not going to hell in a hand basket. It’s never as bad as the Doomsayers desire to make out.

Listen up, if you need a reason or excuse to bail out on SA, don’t bother. Just pack up your shit and fuck off.

We won’t hold it against you. Promise.

Marco if you have a year or two available I will gladly teach you enouth about maths, power consumption etc so that you can also understand. By power saving device I also include items like insulation of pipes and Geyser Blankets. A ripple relay is not a power savings device but a remote switch. There are however proven technology on the market that you can install on a geyser that will save you 25% in power consumption without leaving you in a cold shower.
But to get back to the ripple relay that turns your geyser off: If there is not enouth power available Eskom will do load share and switch your geyser as well as everything else in you house by means of switching the power grid off. So you make the choice: switch geyser of for 2 hours or they switch everything off for two hours. If you cannot make the right choice add another 6 months to the 2 years and I will try and teach you something about logic as well.
I agree one must be positive at all times. Let the ones leave that wants to leave, let HIV AIDS, TB and Malaria take the rest. Then the ones that stayed and were possitive in their state of mind inherit The “NEW SOUTH AFRICA” that will by then be paradise comparred to the rest of the world.

I am being positive. I am positive that the fiasco at Eskom is going to get worse.

Spouting off platitudes is hardly helping the situation. Why doesn’t this guru give motivational speeches to the Eskom bosses to become more positive that they are going to get it fixed?

  221. Richard Catto Says:
    February 14th, 2008 at 19:13

It’s not platitudes, it’s a concrete belief that South Africans will find real solutions.

You think it’s hopeless, don’t you?

    Really?

    Bullshit!

You just want something to whine about.

Hopeless is when tanks are leveling your homes and soldiers snipe at your children playing outside.

That’s the lot of Palestinians, and even they stay, live, work and play in that disastrous situation.

And one day, a solution will be found for them too.

South Africa is a fucking paradise to live and work in. People from all over Africa want in here.

I’m not worried about the power crisis right now because I haven’t experienced down time for over 2 weeks now.

The gold price shot up immediately the world knew we were going to have production problems. We continue to make money. Life goes on pretty much the same.

    Really!

Then why are so many black africans wanting to move the west. And if it was such a paradise then we would have to close the airports and border posts because SA is such a great place for educated people to move to.

Cleary overseas educated people are not lining up and breaking the doors down to get into SA. The only people coming here are Zimbabwean, Nigerianm Somalian etc refugees.

Have your tried living in Joburg to see if “South Africa is a fucking paradise to live and work in”

“Life goes on pretty much the same.”

    Really!

    Yarly.

Then why are so many black africans wanting to move the west.

Because they perceive that their countries don’t offer them the economic opportunities that first world countries do.

    And they’re right.

But I like living and working in South Africa even if it means I will never be as rich as I could be if I was a citizen of a first world country.

And if it was such a paradise then we would have to close the airports and border posts because SA is such a great place for educated people to move to.

You have such a short memory. Do you forget so quickly the scenes on TV of Zimbabweans running through our border fence wires?

Do you forget all the illegals in SA already?

Cleary overseas educated people are not lining up and breaking the doors down to get into SA.

They might not be coming in droves, but some enjoy being here, like Dr DeMartini.

Have your tried living in Joburg to see if “South Africa is a fucking paradise to live and work in”

No. I’m a Capetonian and therefore consider the rest of South Africa to be a hell-hole, but I do have friends in Jozi who enjoy being there.

Richard owes nobody nothing hence he separated his confessions from labour and charity issues and dealt specifically with the negotiated settlements requirements on him and I can tell you here that Richard goes to bed a happy man since he has shaken those guilt fears off him.

Marko,do you endorse or scoff at Richard`s confessions and why???

    singiswad,

you said: “I can tell you here that Richard goes to bed a happy man since he has shaken those guilt fears off him.”

I would beg to differ because of something catto said:

“No. I’m a Capetonian and therefore consider the rest of South Africa to be a hell-hole…”

So in a sentence, catto has exposed himself as a fraud and an opportunist who is trying to save his lily-white ass from the coming africanisation of Cape Town. He is like a dog at his black masters table whining and begging for scraps, knowing that if he does not tow the party line, he will be moered.

He says that he considers anywhere north of Cape Town as a “hell-hole”. Well welcome to the club catto. I suppose you will come up with some way to justify this statement. Perhaps your stupid friend singiswad will update his message to the TRC to mention that you think that the rest of South Africa is a “hell-hole”.

Here’s the thing: I really don’t care what you say or do. We are leaving SA and that will be that.

Africa is not a place for white people anymore. That is very clear. The government knows that “The willing buyer, willing seller principle is not working.”

The public works minister is tabling the expropriation act, so they are hoping to fast-track the process. Regulation of foreign land-ownership is a certainty and with all this it is clear that SA is going to become like Zimbabwe.

You may deride what I am saying and heap scorn upon me, but that’s OK because I no longer care what happens.

After watching the BBC Panorama documentary, “No More Mandela’s”, it is clear that SA is finished. Zuma is an idiot and he will lead SA into more trouble.

Catto, for you that is fine, but don’t expect much. And again, you are a single 40+ white male with no one to worry about except your own self. For me, I have a family.

Again, I no longer care what happens here. Enjoy your slide down and eventually, as you say, the “hell-hole” that is the rest of South Africa will show up on your doorstep in Bergvliet.

    in this country.

But it has to start with you Tim. Start paying TAX. please!

It doesn`t mean in the past I payed taxes lightly since I was criticising
the present rulers who were paying taxes to it while they were criticising
whites for paying taxes for the purcxhase of teargasses and other assault
equipments but I studied its responsibility, accountability, commitment and
dedication and I was satisfied that it was using taxpayers money
    responsibly.

An example was when whityes wanted a road tarred and the previous
government will throw the book at them and tell them they must buy tar
from private makers and it will then tar their road.

Now,you say I must pay my taxes but do you know that over fifty percent of
your taxes is gobbled-up by the government in extravagances and so until
such time when someone will convince me that I`m wrong the government is
accountable, responsible with taxpayers money then I will change my mind.

Samantha!Where on earth have you been since its obvious you only wake-up
now while South Africa has been in existence for fourteen years!?

Negotiations of the kind that you are embarking-on here ended in 1990 and
what followed was preparations and planning which culminated in 1994 where
now it was time for implementation.

South Africa is not about individuals but the collective so coming here

I`m going out into the world today, with my explorer’s hat on.I will try to see everything as if it were a mysterious land. There are places I pass by every day that I’ve never really taken a hard look at before, so I`ll keep an eye out. Examine the world around me a bit more closely.and take a different route, and see what the scenery looks like. There’s no need to be in a hurry every day, is there? Slow down. Get out of the rat race. The world is a wonderful place — you just have to open your eyes.
