Microsoft falling? Dream on people..Heard of Mono? .Nix developers are itching to work with ASP.NET hence Novell is pushing Mono through.

If you believe that MS is soo evil, what about Google, their motto is of course: "Do no evil". But what about the amount of privacy issue they have raised. Think about Street View, the Orkut-Brazillian Goverment issue and not forgeting the Chinese saga as well.

Truth is, MS is a corporate entity and their primary goal is obviously profit. The average person has never heard of The Gimp(Bad Layout) or Firefox (Awesome) for that matter. The truth i, only Alpha and Gates bashing geeks are only too happy to adopt .Nix

But MS crumbilng..come on now do you have better dreams?

I think you should tell us how you really feel Richard! I currently use a few Linux distros and one box with winxp, however, with Microsoft's vista and version7 coming up, I will not be using any microsoft products at all before long.

Personally...I cannot wait to see microsoft fall. Perhaps I'm an asshole, but I just don't like them.

BTW, I apologize for not coming by more often, I will make it a point to visit!

Keith, I do agree. Fact is Microsoft got left behind by the Net from the get go.

In October this year, it will be 13 years since the release of Windows 95.

In 13 years time, I don't think Windows will be as pervasive as it is now. Business applications are more and more being deployed onto Internet / Intranet servers with the front end being displayed in a web browser.

That eliminates the necessity of having any particular platform. If businesses no longer need Windows as their platform, they will do the rational thing and cut costs by moving to the free OSS platform of LAMP, provided they can get the support they need. Companies like Sun Microsystems are stepping up to fulfill that support need.

That's why I think the smart choice for developers is to invest themselves in equipping themselves with LAMP skills. More and more energy and resources are being put into it. Sun invested $1 billion in MySQL. That is not something anyone can afford to ignore.

In South Africa, the smart media companies, such as Mail & Guardian have decided to dump Microsoft's .Net platform and switch to LAMP.

Really, the writing is on the wall for Microsoft. The erosion of their monopoly has begun.

Yes, currently, Microsoft has alot of financial power and prowess with its products, however I feel that "open-source" will take over and leave Microsoft behind if they are not willing to somehow join the "brave new world" of collaboration, don't you agree? Best Wishes, Keith Johnson, Author "365 Great Affirmations"

In addition to the above:

People using outlook can also use gmail via pop and imap - for free. Yahoo does not have imap and and you have to pay for pop.

Google has domain/apps so you can host your email with their great service - for free.

Yahoo has a completely outdated backend so you cannot even host the latest version wordpress there.

Yahooooooo! forgot about their customers.

Shuttleworths Ubuntu reinvents itself every six months and today I read that they have just reached their 500,000 member on thier forum.

Arnold, are you aware that Sun Microsystems owns MySQL?

They purchased MySQL just so they could keep distributing it FREE, plus offer enterprises paid support contracts for it.

Sun has a blog in which they posted about their acquisition.

Open Source Software has gone mainstream in a big way. The whole issue of enterprise level support for OSS products is being addressed in a way that gives big business the confidence to install them.

MySQL is now the most installed DB worldwide. Everyone is using it. FaceBook uses it. WordPress.com uses it. It's pervasive.

Linux is being supported by big businesses too. Novell owns a Linux distribution, for instance.

Shuttleworth's Ubuntu is fast becoming the most popular Linux distro out there, usurping Red Hat.

I tell you, Shuttleworth is admitting no defeat. Proprietory software will continue to be eroded as OSS matures and gains the enterprise level support that has been the chief stumbling block to its adoption by Fortune 500 corporates.

As much as I would like to see the back of Microsoft it is not going to happen. These guys are entrenched all over the world and I cannot see anyone lifting them from their monopoly.

The problem with open source is that it belongs to everyone, no one company or individual can claim ownership or offer support. There is no branding and therefore their marketing cannot compete with the Bill Gates of this world.

Mark Shuttleworth tried giving open source software a boost but even he had to finally admit that the proprietory guys are just too strong.

Agree with what you are saying about the Micro-Yahoo merger. I have two jobs and one uses Outlook, the other uses gMail. gMail wins hands down. It only took a hand full of email to realize what the better service is. I hear so many complaints about Outlook especially after the switch to 2007. Same goes with IM services. gTalk is my go to guy but I never used yahoo messenger or msn, so perhaps I am biased. AIM just always left me feeling like I was in junior high/high school. What are your thoughts on video messaging services like ooVoo (http://www.ooVoo.com)?
