Emily Williams’ family is going back to England
Posted on May 11th, 2008 by Richard Catto 2,875 views
On February 12 2008, 12 year old Emily Williams was shot and killed by armed robbers while she sat in her mom’s car outside the house that was being robbed. I wrote about this a week after the event and pondered why her mother had remained smack in the centre of the hot zone, when she had been concerned enough about the situation to call for help.
Now her family has recently announced that they’re emigrating to England because they no longer feel safe in South Africa. Well, as it turns out, when you read the IOL article you discover that they’re not emigrating at all. Roger Williams is British and so he’s going home. The only ones who are emigrating are his South African wife, Toni, and their daughter, Sophie.
Poor 10 year old Sophie, being dragged off to dreary dismal and unsafe England just because her mother failed to do the sensible thing and get clear of a dangerous situation.
The Williams protest that they feel everyone has a right to go about their business without having to worry about crime.
What a load of shit.
Thoughout history men and women and children have had to contend with the threat of crime and violence, threat of abduction into slavery, threat of rape, threat of being robbed at sword point, and threat of being killed. Crime will never ever ever disappear. We will always have crime in every single country on the face of this planet for as long as people are alive.
Even in Britain, there is crime for you to worry about. You will never find a place to run to which will offer you a crime free zone. It simply does not exist.
America is even safer than Britain and the reason is because America is flooded with guns. In America, if you feel threatened by crime, you go buy a gun, and many households have one. In some US cities, local laws compel each household to own a gun.
In Britain, if you feel threatened by crime, you can’t buy a gun. I actually don’t know what the hell you do in Britain if you feel threatened by crime. Maybe you emigrate to America?

May 11th, 2008 at 15:00Richard, just because there was violence, slavery, rape etc. throughout history does not mean that it should continue forever. I thought humankind was striving to be more civilised.
Yes of course there is crime in other countries but the rate of violent crime in our country is totally out of control. Our rape statistics are completely berserk, and that’s only the cases that are reported. There is simply no adequate punishment for the criminals and our prisons are overcrowded. How is it that the rapist and killer scum can repeatedly commit crimes and keep getting released on bail?
I don’t know how you can keep denying this and keep blaming Mrs Williams for the death of her daughter.Yes one can go and buy a gun but really what we need is effective policing and punishment.

Richard Catto Says:
May 11th, 2008 at 15:19Well that’s the way people are choosing to look at it.
They expect the police to protect them.
And that is a fundamental mistake to make, one which may cost you your life.
You must protect yourself and your family. It is your responsibility, and if you fail, you may die.
And this opinion is shared by an American blogger.
You can disagree all you like, but at the end of the day, even if you stay in America, the police may let you down when you need them most.

Marko Says:
May 11th, 2008 at 15:43Safety is our constitutional right as citizens and it is the duty of the state to uphold our rights.
The simple fact is that criminals literally “get away with murder” because they can.
Yes it is ultimately our responsibility to protect our families but we are totally outnumbered and outgunned by the bad guys so this task becomes near impossible.
Sure the police will let us down, we know this and ADT knows this too

Richard Catto Says:
May 11th, 2008 at 16:01South Africans need to start thinking more like Americans and less like whiny limeys.
No where does it state that the state has a duty and responsibility to keep you safe. Your personal safety is your problem.
The police investigate crimes, they don’t run a bodyguard service.
There’s nothing impossible about defending yourself against crime. This attitude that the Williams exhibit that they have a right to live in safety and not have to worry about criminals is bullshit.
Look where it got them. One dead daughter.
It doesn’t matter a darn what you believe the situation should be, it isn’t like that. Not anywhere in the world. Their attitude gets them killed.
Running away because of crime is not an excuse I am prepared to accept. Do people run away from crime when it happens to them in England or the United States?
People leave South Africa because they have no commitment to it. They have no patriotism. They feel this country is inferior.
They’re not proud of being a South African like an American is proud of being an American.
-
Marko Says:
May 11th, 2008 at 17:05The police investigate crimes, they dont run a bodyguard service.
Now this is bulltwang Richard. See the SAPS mission statement.
It is the fundamental right of every South African to be safe. This is in the constitution so therefore it fucken is the duty of the state to uphold that right. It’s not bullshit as you say, it is the law!
Not every body is trained to defend themselves or even has propensity for violence. Many people aren’t even physically capable of defending themselves. A mate of mine (young, fit, strong rugby player) was mugged and severely beaten by three attackers in broad daylight in Dean Street, Newlands.
The cops knew the perps and apprehended them. Apparently they are repeat offenders but somehow are still roaming the streets. Now that Richard, is bullshit!South Africans are patriotic, we are damn proud but we do have a right to be pissed off by epidemic crime and to demand our safety from the government that takes our tax money.
Tell me Rich, do you own a firearm or any sort of weapon and carry it around with you? I do, and used to carry it around and it’s a p.i.t.a!
-
Richard Catto Says:
May 11th, 2008 at 18:50Marko, that mission statement is just platitudes and cannot be relied on.
No police force in any country can guarantee personal safety at all times.
I suggest that everyone in South Africa gives up on expecting the police force to help them when they need help.
The police are only there to arrest you, give you tickets, and generally harass you.
The two most common outcomes of approaching the police for help are:
a) they do nothing
b) they increase your problems -

Running away because of crime is not an excuse I am prepared to accept. Do people run away from crime when it happens to them in England or the United States? These 2 statements echo each other, and come down to the same thing: unfortunately, it is a reality of society that people DO actually run away from crime, whether theyre in the UK, the USA, SA, Outer Mongolia, wherever. In Britain, when there is crime, oh yes: they run. And they run fast, furiously and screaming. They run to France, Greece, Italy, and in my case, back to good old SA. Oh boy, can I not wait?!
Here we have a stiflingly claustrophobic, xenophobic society: a society where my neighbour was petrol bombed a week ago, and this is England?!
No need to criticise SA for crime at all, it is worse elsewhere: it might just perhaps go by unnoticed as perhaps SA is historically the scapegoat of western society? -
Marko Says:
May 11th, 2008 at 20:01No police force in any country can guarantee personal safety at all times.
Of course not, I am not expecting that but it is undeniable that we are not enjoying even a reasonable degree of safety.
It is terrible that we have to pay private security companies to protect us, but even that is not enough protection it would seem.I suggest that everyone in South Africa gives up on expecting the police force to help them when they need help.
Now Richard, that sounds like something one of the uncommitted South Africans that you talk of would say. That is not a reasonable suggestion and we need to fight for our rights and make sure that the police do what is expected of them by law.
What would you suggest we do Richard, take up arms? Take the law into our own hands?

Richard Catto Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 02:56@Letitia: Okay, I stand corrected. Whiny limeys run when they are subjected to crime. Poor scared little fings.
I wonder when they will evolve a backbone?
-
Richard Catto Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 03:13@Marko: I’m enjoying much more than a reasonable degree of safety. I haven’t experienced any crime in years. I think the last time I experienced crime was 7 years ago.
Otoh, the police have interfered with me many more times and much more recently. The police have caused me more problems than criminals have.
I don’t pay any private security company one red cent. I do, however, live in a townhouse in a secure complex.
I don’t believe that any police force in any country should be relied upon by anyone.
It has nothing to do with what you call reasonable suggestions. It is what it is.
The cops are not here to help you. Not in this country. Not in ANY country.
It doesn’t matter if they write that they are, they still aren’t. They never will be, because the police just cannot fulfill that function.
You need to do whatever you feel is necessary to protect yourself. South African law gives you ample space to act in your self-defence.

May 12th, 2008 at 08:18Here’s a story of a 53 year old man whose wife was shot dead in her driveway in Bergvliet.
See, all the rich whiteys living in their splendid old fashioned houses with big gardens all built at least 50 years ago are now sitting ducks.
If you live in one of those old fashioned houses, you gonna get raped.
The answer is to move into a townhouse in a secure complex.
Or alternatively run screaming back to England and beg the Queen to protect you.

May 12th, 2008 at 11:43Well, if the UK is so unsafe because of the lack of firearms, then how come you are 28 times more likely to be murdered with a firearm in the USA than you are in the UK?
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_wit_fir_percap-crime-murders-firearms-per-capita
And about 700 times more likely to get murdered with a firearm in SA than in the UK. No wonder Mr Williams is taking his family to live over there.
Sod “people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” – people in glass houses should maybe get their facts straight before posting made up crap.
-
Marko Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 11:51Richard, so this is becoming an anti rich whitey thing again
So indeed Richard there is a crime problem if we must all move into secure complexes with high walls and electric fences, living almost on top of each other.
You’ll see also in that article you posted that the woman’s killer was out on bail at the time for a similar crime. This is the fucking problem, why do murderers get bail!? They just kill again, they don’t care about human life.
Richard, posting about one mad cop doesn’t mean they are all bad.
What kind of problems were police causing you btw? -
Richard Catto Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 12:13@Marko: I recently read a story about homeless people in Rondebosch. Apparently the problem is getting worse and people want it addressed.
A few sentences into the article and I realised that all the fucking rich whiteys in Rondebosch wanted to do was to get rid of the homeless people, NOT HELP THEM.
They are a bunch of fucking cocksuckers. I would slit all their throats, seize their assets and open wide the doors of all their homes to the homeless before I lifted a finger against the homeless.
You have no idea how much I loathe rich whiteys who are so completely self-absorbed and do not wish to help anyone less fortunate than themselves.
They can all die today. I will not miss a single one of them.
-
Richard Catto Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 12:16@Marko: We must no longer tolerate people becoming so rich that they can buy everything and not lift a finger to help others.
The moment the person reaches that level, they must automatically just die.
-
Andrew Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 12:18Hell, the only reason for me fleeing the country would be to get away from other white South Africans – Mediocre, uninspiring, bland, ignorant, self-absorbed, insecure, insipid, tepid – just a few adjectives that describe most South Africans (and Richard too of course)
-
Richard Catto Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 12:22@Andrew: Aaaah, that’s just priceless.
-
Marko Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 12:36Slit their throats eh?
I believe I read the same article, in the Tatler I think it was. Those homeless do not want help. They are happy living next to the river (and pissing and shitting in it), being “car guards” and “car washers” by day. They drink and make a mess.
I believe on Sundays there’s even a pastor that picks them up in his kombi and takes them to church. Now if you were a local business, a rate payer and taxpayer, surely you wouldn’t be happy?
How should the locals help them? Why isn’t the government helping them? How are you helping the homeless Rich, have you invited them to setup camp in your secure complex?
-
Richard Catto Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 13:14@Marko: If these Rondeboschers don’t like living next to the poor, it is because they are rich scum.
I think they must run off to England and complain to the Queen. She is all ears to them. She is dying to hear their complaints so she can say, “there there, you poor little fings. let mommy Queen make it all better for you.”
They must hurry up and die so the homeless can move into their lovely white houses.
-
Marko Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 13:25Again Richard, please tell us how you are helping these souls, or how the Rondebosch businesses should, and have you invited them to live next to or in your secure complex? Will you invite them in to use your bathroom, or for a bottle of Autumn Harvest Crackling on these cold nights?
-
Richard Catto Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 13:32@Marko: This is not about me. I refuse to discuss me. We’re discussing the Rondeboschers. And the rich whiteys. And the whiners running off to England.
In fact, we are discussing everything but me and what I am doing.
-
Marko Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 14:06Oh come on Richard, that’s a cop-out. I’m gonna take that to mean that you are doing squat for the homeless.
An intelligent man such Mr Williams who has lived here for 17 years and worked himself up to such a high position would not take leaving his home and uprooting his family lightly. It is highly unjust and disrespectful to call him a “whiner”, especially after he has suffered such a tragic loss.
-
Richard Catto Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 15:02@Marko: I’m championing their cause. That’s more than what the Rondeboschers are even prepared to contemplate.
Big deal @ William’s 17 years. I’ve been here over 40 years.
He can go. He’s not irreplaceable. A nice black graduate will take over his job and do a better job all without whining about people shooting his daughter because his wife wouldn’t bloody move to safety.
-
Marko Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 15:21Championing their cause, how noble… Methinks it’s more like having a go at rich whiteys

As I’ve stated before Rich, It’s mainly the businesses in the area that are suffering, and again: these people don’t want help, they are happy living as they are.So have you achieved that kind of status in your 40 years? Executive director and CFO of a large corporation?
Sure he is not irreplaceable but I hardly think a graduate, black or white will be appointed director and CFO, don’t be daft.
Please see the quote from his employer:
AECI said in a statement that it was “saddened that people of his [Williams'] calibre are being lost owing to the national environment of crime that continues to plague this country”
Anybody, black or white is going to be highly upset at losing a daughter because criminal bastards shot her, because the justice system failed to keep them behind bars… and not because the wife made an error in judgement.
Not once have you condemned the bastard criminals Rich. I think you just have a vendetta because the Williams’ are ‘rich whiteys’ in your eyes.
-
Richard Catto Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 15:38How are Rondebosch businesses suffering?
Those people don’t suffer. They think they’re suffering when they make R200K a month instead of R250K.
Then they go home to their palaces and complain that their garden boy broke a petal off one of their rose bushes.
Oh how they suffer!
AECI released some PR spin. Meanwhile they’re already lining up a black replacement for him which will elevate their AA placements.
I promise you that their daughter would be alive if mommy hadn’t dallied.
You cannot control criminals. You can only control yourself. If you see danger and you unlock your front gate and switch off your alarms, then you made it happen when you could have protected yourself.
And then they go around shouting that they have a full right to stand in the way of a train and expect the state to protect them.
Please give me a break. They became victims due to their own poor decisions.
This is what I am trying to get through to you.
Tim is right. You are a taaikop.
-
Richard Catto Says:
May 12th, 2008 at 15:45@Factoid: Well, Mr Factoid, if the stats are so bad, then I think all the whiny limeys should run now.
Let all the rich whiteys run like the cowardly rats that they are.
Oh the stats! The stats! They’re coming to k-k-k-kill me.
Right, and when I see criminals running around my car, I’ll just add to my chances of getting killed by sitting there and talking on my cell phone to the security company because really, all I need to do to be safe is CALL SOMEONE on my fucking cellphone.
And then I must sit right there, waiting to die.

I see you are still at it. I guess I was one of those “rich whiteys” whose throat you would like to have cut.
Anyway, I am glad we are out of SA, but sorry to have laid off so many good people. Canada is a good place to live. Low inflation and lots of oil in the land.
As for SA, I see that it’s more of the same violence and low intensity anarchy. It will only get worse.
I am glad that more people are leaving SA for other countries. Pehaps there is crime in those countries but nothing like the level of anarchy in SA.
-
Richard Catto Says:
May 13th, 2008 at 15:51@Obaht: Oh hello, Obaht. You still roaming around here from time to time?
I think it’s the people who left who always want to overestimate how many people are flowing out.
-
Obaht Says:
May 13th, 2008 at 21:02Catto,
Maybe it’s the other way around. Perhaps you are the one that is underestimating how many people are leaving SA.
Many people leave and don’t talk about it because they are afraid of being branded as traitors and chickens by the people they leave behind. (I am gald to talk about my experience and am happy to share with anyone who will listen what SA is becoming.)
If a person is breathing these days they can get to work in Canada now. It is easy to get in over here because of the shortage of skilled workers. I meet foreign workers on work permits from Africa all the time.
On the other hand, the standard of living continues to slide in SA, except for the really wealthy in SA, and that is what SA will eventually become. A few people that have it all at the expense of the millions of poor and an economy that is in tatters and has to rely on the whims of tourism.
How sad!

May 15th, 2008 at 20:49So Richard, so there was an armed robbery at Barristers on Tuesday night.
Tell me how customers in a restaurant became victims by their own poor decisions? The criminals are coming from afar to attack us in our own neighborhoods. Fortunately at least one was caught later that night in Phillipi by the police. The fact that you have not yet experienced crime is just luck. It is only a matter of time of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ my friend. What will get you in trouble is your false sense that their is no crime problem.
We might as well lock ourselves in our secure complexes and never go out at night because we are just not safe anymore. Two people I know were hijacked in the space of a week in Wynberg, both not 200m from the police station. My point, Richard, is that criminals can be controlled. You lock them up and fucking keep them locked up, not this catch/release/catch/release bullshit.
My point is also that we have to fight for our rights and that the govt. & police must be held accountable and fucking do something about the problem. -

Richard Catto Says:
June 3rd, 2008 at 16:07@khathutshelo: Absolutely! There’s crime everywhere.
It’s not as if the Williams have some implacable killer stalking them to kill them all. They walked into a random situation and the mother made a serious error in judgement and her daughter was killed by a bullet not aimed at her.
It could happen to them anywhere. In Britain, their daughters could be killed by someone like Ian Huntley.
Basically, I think people who run from South Africa using crime as their excuse are deluding themselves. They will not find a safe crime free haven on the other side. It simply does not exist.
