However at Spar Supermarkets it is more like 24% because they have become outrageously expensive when compared to Checkers, which is the cheapest store to buy from.
The Spar I buy from now routinely charges much more on everyday items such as milk, cheese, eggs, baked beans, coffee, sugar, flour. Not only that, but their latest scam is to charge more for items at the till than is marked on the shelves.
This is becoming endemic now. Unless I thoroughly check my receipt, Spar will take as much from me as they can get away with.
Also leftover bread which they bake in house is sold the following day at the same price as freshly baked bread.

Woolworth’s Food stores are for the Super Rich

How many of you enjoy shopping at Woolworth’s Food stores?
I do, but only when I’m feeling wealthy because as delectable as their wares are, they’re damned expensive.
That this is so is confirmed in a recent survey.
24% of Woolworth Food store customers earn over R10 000 per month. Definitely a store for the elites.
Runner up is Pick n Pay of which 12% of their customers earn over R10 000 per month.
I wonder where Spar fits in because that is where I shop most frequently due to its vicinity? However I’ve noticed of late that they have begun employing a number of underhanded tricks to boost their bottom line.
Spar does the following:
- Marks goods on special and then charges the old price at the till
- Tacks on an extra couple of rand on top of the marked shelf price
- Rings up goods more than once
I always check my till slip and have gone back on more than one occasion to have over rung goods refunded. When I’ve bought goods advertised on special, I have watched the rung up price like a hawk to ensure they are charging the reduced price. However, I have been caught by them (more than once) over pricing goods.
I bought a pack of six cheese griller sausages the other day, marked on the shelf as R20.99 and ended up paying R22.99 at the till. Even though I checked my slip, that one passed me by, but I did register a fleeting suspicion that that price was not the one on the shelf. The next day, a quick check confirmed my suspicion.
Thing is, by employing these tactics on a regular basis, Spar has a statistical chance of getting away with it with many less aware customers who just pay and walk out without checking their till slip.
It’s getting to be such a regular thing now that I’m thinking of complaining to the Store Manager about it.
